How the fuel split calculator works

Enter the trip distance, the car's fuel economy and the fuel price to get the fuel cost. Then list everyone who rode and how far each person rode. The cost is split in proportion to distance, and shown next to an equal split for comparison. The driver counts as a rider for the full trip.

A worked example

A 400-mile trip at 30 mpg uses about 13.3 gallons. At $3.60 a gallon that is $48.00. If the driver and Sam ride 400 miles, Priya 250 and Leo 120, the split by distance is $16.41, $16.41, $10.26 and $4.92.

Tolls, parking and wear

Tolls and parking are usually split equally between everyone in the car. Some groups add a small amount for wear on the car. Agree it before you leave.
